“THE MAGIC PILL” by Eva Szumilas

Eva Szumilas, a Polish-Lebanese designer based in Beirut since 2010, designed and produced “THE MAGIC PILL” – her first aid kit, a life box – for the event organized by ROADS FOR LIFE to support Lebanese firefighters of Civil Defence. The event finished with an online auction.

My First-Aid kit, essential in every home, car and workplace designed for this special cause reflects the surreal reality we live in Lebanon since October 2019. Economic crisis, worsened by the Beirut port explosion of last year. Shortage of fuel, electricity and medicines. A daily struggle for every person living here, we all hope for a miracle, “THE MAGIC PILL” that will cure us all. And like in The Matrix movie, “red pill” and “blue pill” refer to a choice between the willingness to learn a potentially unsettling or life-changing truth by taking the red pill or remaining in contented ignorance with the blue pill. Morpheus: “You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes”. Today I offer you “red pill” as a mind opening uncomfortable truth about the world surrounding us, about reality we live in, about choices and decisions we can take to make this place a better world for our next generations. It’s a wake up call, a call for a change. Don’t miss it! For those who prefer to live in denial, an imaginary fairy tale, a blue pill is available on request.
