An unusual home in Los Angeles

This project, part of Hollywood’s legendary history, was a unique opportunity for Paul McClean, of McClean Design, to rework a promontory site, in order to enjoy a view of the entire Los Angeles basin. The client wanted to build a large house suitable for entertaining, especially outdoors, for a large Italian family, who would use it as a respite from their life in Canada.

Paul McClean, of McClean Design, created a home in Los Angeles, California, with interior design by Colabhouse. A glass house, surrounded by water on three sides, reflecting the surrounding urban landscape. Entering from the street, an access courtyard leads to a garage and a staircase leading to the central entrance, protected by marble slats. The interior overlooks the landscape to the rear, thanks to a two-storey glass wall, revealing a garden courtyard, a green marble waterfall, dense foliage and a water basin in the basement. To the east are the main living spaces; to the west, an office, the main staircase and a guest bedroom. The living and dining areas extend onto the peninsula surrounded on three sides by the pool, which contains a large Jacuzzi, swimming areas, Baja shelves and a fire pit, before cascading down the entrance steps. The kitchen and breakfast nook are adjacent and open onto the pool and lush orchard, in which a family room and see-through fireplace nestle. The upper level houses the owners’ bedroom and two suites. A landscaped roof garden above the living room can be accessed from the hallway. In the basement are three bedrooms and unique areas. A multimedia enclosure with sofas would serve as a rest area for grandchildren. The central living area opens onto the green-walled water basin, with a bronze fireplace and marble bar. Light from the courtyard is shared with a sports area and a wellness sphere. A billiard room with conversation corner, cellar and humidor complete the basement, along with staff areas and a commercial kitchen. The palette features soft natural tones of warm travertine and bleached walnut, with brass and bronze accents.
