Charming retreat in Megève, France

A chalet in need of renovation and extension, but also a personalized interior design with an artisanal character. That was the challenge of the agency “Refuge – Architecture d’intérieur” team. A challenge met for this Megève cottage which breathes the sweetness of life.

It is against a magnificent backdrop of mountain ranges, stretching from Rochebrune to Mont d’Arbois, passing through the eternally snow-capped peaks of Mont-Blanc, that this masterpiece of a chalet in Megève stands out, in France. This shed is a delicate balance between the pragmatism of its geometric shapes and the softness of its materials, in turn silky and cozy. The exterior is deceptive. It is only when the door is passed that the visitor realizes the large volumes hidden by the hull. Distributed over three floors, including a custom-made wine cellar, its various living spaces come alive around key elements: the copper-colored metal fireplace and the long table in the living room or the snow wall of the staircase – central room of the cottage – which connects the three levels of the dwelling. Passages and galleries, usually lost spaces of a home, are designed to be, on the contrary, cocooning breaks. Together, they guide the pace naturally towards the pool/spa, a real gem of the place. The whole thing is completed by an eclectic choice of furniture, aiming to create an atmosphere of warmth, contrasting with the sparkling and frosty whiteness of the surrounding landscape.
